HelpQ: I have a two year old male newfoundland and he has hot spots. once the breeder suggested whip worm problems. went to vet and took care of it. i think he is allergic to fleas so i've been treating him with advantage, and he only eats the best dogfood, dynamite. anyhow i've been reading your past q&a's and found something interesting. my dog is prone to yeast in his ears, plus hot spots. do you think the two are connected? i have a feeling. i've gotten some cortisol spray for him and am wondering if some sort of salve would help? he is big....160lb and the hot spots are terrible, sometimes smelling. is there anyway to stay ontop of these things? help. i think my dog is the only newfoundland my vet has ever treated. do i need a specialist? thank you. A: You might want to see different vet or vet dermatologist. the hot spots and ear infections are usually secondary to underyling allergies either inhalent and/or food allergies which can be sort through with allergy workup or allergy testing. also might want to have thyroid test in this breed to check for low thyroid

Ear mites & jaw problemsQ: Hello, my cat cookie dough is three years old. he has ear mites ( both ears are quite black inside) our other cat however does not. i have mita-clear to treat this problem, but it is not getting any better. now he has a problem with his mouth. he is constantly smacking it as if something in his mouth is stuck and he doesn't open it very wide. also, quite often he will suddenly open his mouth and bite down as if something is hurting him from the inside of his mouth and either jump of me or shake his head then clinch his jaw some more. we have gotten his mouth open far enough to see that there is nothing obstructing it. what should i do for him and what could this problem be from? can these two problems be related? both of our cats are on advantage and their shots are current until january 2005. thank you for your time and consideration on this matter. A: Tough to say without directly seeing cat in office. need vet exam and blood work to get to bottom. i dont think related

Is it safe?Q: I have been using advantage flea control on my 5 month old puppy. i am happy with it, but am looking for something cheaper. is hartz flea control harmful to dogs? i am not looking for the best.. just a good flea control coverage. i also have 3 children. what is the least harmful? A: I am not familiar with the hartz product line. i can only suggest that if a product has been working successfully in the past why not stick with it.
